FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything You Need to Know
Straight answers. No fluff, no jargon — just the facts you need to decide if laser is right for you.
The Basics
Is laser hair removal painful for men?
Most clients describe it as a quick rubber-band snap or a mild warm pinch — not outright painful. Modern diode lasers include built-in contact cooling that dramatically reduces discomfort. Sensitivity varies by area: bony areas like the spine or knees can feel sharper, while flatter areas like the back or chest are quite comfortable. If you’re concerned, mention it to your technician — they can adjust the settings for you.
How many sessions do I need?
Most men need 6–8 sessions to achieve significant, long-lasting results. Hair grows in cycles — the laser only targets follicles in the active growth phase. Spacing sessions 4–6 weeks apart ensures you catch each cycle. Some areas with coarser hair (like the back) may benefit from a couple of additional sessions. We’ll give you a personalised recommendation at your free consultation.
What body areas can men get treated?
We treat virtually all body areas including: back, shoulders, chest, abdomen, arms, underarms, full legs (upper & lower), face, neck, beard line, and intimate areas. The most popular treatments for men are back & shoulders, chest, and full legs.
How long does each session take?
Session length depends entirely on the treatment area. As a general guide: Underarms: ~15 min · Face/Neck: ~20 min · Chest: ~30 min · Full Back: ~45 min · Full Legs: ~60–90 min · Full Body: 2–3 hours. You can walk in and out of most sessions on your lunch break.
How long do results last?
Laser hair removal delivers permanent hair reduction — not just temporary removal. After completing a full course of treatment, most clients see 80–90% permanent reduction. Some fine or light hairs may regrow over time, and occasional maintenance sessions (1–2 per year) can address these.
Preparation & Aftercare
How do I prepare for my treatment session?
Shave the treatment area 12–24 hours before your appointment (do not wax or pluck). Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products for at least 4 weeks prior. Arrive with clean, dry skin — no lotion, deodorant, or perfume on the area. Avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin on the day. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for easy access to the treatment area.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — shaving between sessions is perfectly fine and encouraged. The laser targets the follicle beneath the skin, so shaving doesn’t interfere with treatment. What you must avoid is waxing, plucking, epilating, or any method that removes the root.
What should I avoid after my treatment?
For 24–48 hours after each session avoid: direct sun exposure, hot showers/baths/saunas/steam rooms, swimming pools and ocean swimming, intense exercise, harsh skincare products or fragrances on the treated area. Do keep the area clean and apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser.
Can I go to the gym after a session?
We recommend skipping intense exercise for 24 hours post-treatment. The treated skin is temporarily sensitive, and heat and sweat can cause irritation or folliculitis. Light walking is fine. After 24 hours, you’re good to get back to your full training routine.
How soon will I see results?
You’ll notice hair shedding 1–3 weeks after your first session. By sessions 3–4, most clients see a significant reduction in density and thickness. After completing your full course, the difference is dramatic. Results continue to improve for several months after your last session.
Safety & Suitability
Is laser hair removal safe for men?
Yes — laser hair removal is a safe, well-established treatment when performed by trained professionals using appropriate equipment. At Barewolf, all our technicians are certified, our lasers are TGA-approved, and we conduct skin assessments before every course of treatment.
Can men with dark skin tones get laser hair removal?
Yes. Our medical-grade diode laser is safe and effective for darker skin tones, including Fitzpatrick types IV–VI. Modern diode and Nd:YAG lasers are specifically designed to work safely across all skin types. We’ll assess your skin tone at your free consultation and calibrate accordingly.
What skin and hair types work best with laser?
The laser targets melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. Ideal candidates have dark hair — the darker the hair, the more effectively the laser targets it. Light blonde, red, grey, or white hair responds less effectively. Most men see excellent outcomes due to naturally coarser, darker body hair.
Are there any side effects I should know about?
Common temporary side effects: redness and mild swelling (similar to mild sunburn, usually resolves within 24 hours), slight sensitivity or tingling, temporary pigment changes (more common in darker skin tones if aftercare isn’t followed). Serious side effects are rare when treatment is properly performed.
Can laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs?
Yes — laser hair removal is one of the best solutions for chronic ingrown hairs. By permanently reducing the number of hairs growing back, it eliminates the main cause of ingrowns. Men who suffer from razor bumps on the neck, chest, or intimate areas often find laser treatment transformative.
Are there areas you don't treat?
We do not treat areas directly over tattoos (the laser can interfere with the ink and cause blistering), areas with active skin infections, open wounds, or certain skin conditions. We can treat around tattoos. We’ll review any relevant conditions at your free consultation.
At Barewolf
What makes Barewolf different from other clinics?
Most laser clinics cater primarily to women. Barewolf is built exclusively for men — from our private treatment environment to our technicians who specialise in men’s anatomy, body hair patterns, and the specific concerns men have about this type of treatment. We’ve designed every part of our experience to feel natural, private, and judgment-free.
Do I need a consultation before booking treatments?
Yes — we always recommend starting with a free consultation before your first treatment. This allows us to assess your skin and hair type, discuss your goals, explain what to expect, and perform a patch test if needed. It’s a no-obligation conversation, and it ensures we create the right treatment plan for you. Takes about 30 minutes.
What technology does Barewolf use?
We use Lumenis Splendor X and Lutronic Clarity II — two of the world’s leading laser devices. Medical-grade diode laser technology, TGA-approved for use in Australia. We invest in the best equipment because your results — and safety — depend on it.
Do you offer packages, gift cards, or promotions?
Yes. We offer multi-session packages (3, 6, or 9 sessions) at discounted rates, as well as gift cards. Contact us or visit the clinic to ask about current promotions. We run seasonal specials throughout the year.
